I attended a few retrospectives in NYC over the past month and found both to be entirely captivating. Sigmar Polke at the MoMA and Jeff Koons at The Whitney. Polke, a German Artist known for being part of the post-war rise in contemporary art, experimented across several mediums. He isn't classified in one category as his work is considered Abstract Expressionism, Pop Minimalism and Conceptualism. He was an artist that you could never pigeonhole, as right when you thought that you would understand where is he going, he would completely change course and surprise you. Walking through the stretch of his work at the MoMa was very interesting and it took me through a series of very distinctive, political and social movements that I had not ever experienced before.
Koons, one of my favorite artists of todays world, totally flipped me upside down. His work is happy and quirky and takes you to a place that could only be described as Wonderland. Comparable to some of my favorite artists, Salvador Dali and Andy Warhol, Koons' modernized work is highly stylized and combines irony with the perverse, adding the emotional and sexual connectivity that you wouldn't normally see, while being pieced and pulled together so elegantly. Playing and creating in the space of metaphor, Koons' pieces make you think, but take the most ordinary and create something absolutely fun and extraordinary. Unlike Polke, a lot of Koons' work is exactly what it seems- a balloon dog? No hidden meaning there, it's literally just an oversized, adorable balloon doggie. Koon's Puppy is said to be the single greatest public work of sculpture since Rodin.
Speaking of art, usually around this time you can find me dancing in the dust at Burning Man. The art on the playa is unlike anything you have ever seen before; the installations, the detail, the way it is meant to look during the day in a dust storm and then completely transform and light up at night to where it seems as if you are walking on the moon. It's the most electrifying experience and one of my all time favorites. Every year gets better. Sadly, I sat this year out due to scheduling conflicts, but I very much look forward to seeing all the amazing photos on my feed over the next few weeks from absolutely everyone that I know that attended.
Here is a new playlist called X-Y that I put together for the start of fall and the start of a new found focus. Some fun, some funk, some burn. Also, here is a link to Artsy's page on Koons (my absolute favorite website to learn all about art). Happy Holiday's, America!
